Looks like David Cage is up and at it again, as the newest Quantic Dream title brings even more eye-watering graphics, unparalleled storytelling and the mandatory bathroom scene to the table. Detroit: Become Human is one of those games that would win a Palme d’Or if Cannes let interactive drama games participate. In the United States of 2038, androids are everywhere, performing the menial jobs humans have deemed beneath their dignity, and must only operate in spaces especially segregated for them. Does this remind you of anything?
The game is set in the titular city of Detroit, and the year is 2039. A few seconds ago I wrote "fictional" about the city, but then I hit that backspace: of course the game's story is fiction, and the future it depicts might never come to be, but the execution of the setting is so grounded that it feels extremely realistic.
Gameplay is dominated by quick time events (QTEs) and motion controls. While I never had an issue with the motion controls, many others were not so lucky. An easy mode is available if it is a major problem, but I would recommend the “experienced” mode, as the QTEs involved are well placed and engaging. Free movement can be awkward, but the game does not let you wander very much. Mostly, you are making decisions and choosing dialogue. The social issues at the heart of this game are obvious and, in my opinion, lacking in subtlety. Not all statements must be subtle to have meaning or beauty, but D:BH is so forward with its agenda that it is inartistic and abrupt when it tries to put in its two cents concerning the modern social climate.
There’s also something to be said about the timeliness of the plot. While the themes are certainly rooted in history (the Underground Android Railway to Canada, anyone?), there are so many parallels to be drawn. Kara and Alice, for one, can be arrested and taken to a “recycling centre”, where they’ll be separated from each other forever. Perhaps real life writes the plot, perhaps the plot real life, but that sure looks like what U.S. immigration is doing to migrant families right now.
Unfortunately, the execution isn't completely perfect. One element that might prove a bit jarring is the presence of quite a few invisible walls. This comes in addition to the actually visible ones when the operating system tells your androids that they can't go somewhere because it conflicts with the task they've been given.
A pretty impactful and definitely flavorful consequence of that is that when it's time for your androids to go rogue, you can decide to break that wall, with a scene that is at the same time symbolic and cathartic following all the abuse.
The soundtrack was personalized for each main character’s story and scored by three different composers, builds up from a faint whisper at the start of the game to its earth-shattering conclusion. In the words of Quantic Dream co-CEO Guillaume de Fondaumiere:
You could see it as a mix of old-school adventure games with unforgettable storytelling, top-notch acting, and cutting-edge graphics, and as such, it's definitely a very successful experiment. While Detroit: Become Human is the quintessential Quantic Dream game, the additional variety and the spectacular level of craftsmanship it involves may make it intriguing even for those who aren't part of the studio's usual target audience.
